President’s Message
Rappahannock Lions Club

The Lions Club is the largest service club organization in the world. The Rappahannock County Lions club is one of 48,000 clubs serving in 200 countries. We are a 501(c)3 organization (a nonprofit established for community improvement) with about 40 members. Our activities are funded through membership dues and donations. We are one of the few nonprofits in the entire country that charge no administrative fees to our community programs – all expenses are paid by our dues. This means that 100% of all donations and other income goes to the people we serve.

Our motto “We Serve” is more than a slogan; it is the core of who we are and what we do. We are driven to make Rappahannock a better place to live. We serve in many ways, such as:

Helping those in need.

  • Maintain and operate the County’s “Loan Closet” with free medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and hospital beds
  • Provide free vision and hearing testing for children and the elderly
  • Provide free eyeglasses for those in need

Supporting youth activities

  • Provide scholarships for students. Since 2014 we have provided 33 students scholarships for four year college, 12 students scholarships for community college, and 7 students scholarships for students attending trade schools
  • Provide donations to youth activities such as After Prom night, Rappahannock Soccer League, Scouting, Rappahannock Girls Little League, Shop with a Cop
  • Work with Leo Clubs from Rappahannock High School and Wakefield Country Day School for community service activities such as litter pickup along county roads. Leos are high school students that are an affiliate Lions organization
  • Support children with cancer through the Camp Fantastic program and specific events such as Cancer is Messy, and other community events

Making Rappahannock a better place to live

  • Oversee a major plastics recycling program. As of October 2023, we have partnered with other Rappahannock charitable groups to recycle nearly 11,000 pounds of plastics which have been converted to 21 benches which have been placed at locations around the county
  • Partner with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Sheriff’s Department in the National Drug Takeback Program
  • Providing services and volunteers for county elections, the Food Pantry and numerous other charitable activities
  • Support community activities with logistics such as setting up tents and parking
  • Sponsor community events, such as the annual Celebrate America concerts
  • Conduct semiannual Red Cross blood drives

What you can do

We are always looking to grow and do more. You can help in a few ways:

  • Come see us to see what we do. We have meetings twice a month at the Sperryville firehouse. We start our meetings with a song, eat dinner, and have a good time and even get a little business done. We meet at 6:30 pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month
  • Help us help others through donating. The easiest way is to send a check made out to Rappahannock lions Club and mail to Po Box 132, Washington, VA 22747
  • Join Us! Becoming a Lion is easy.  All you need is a desire to help others.  While we appreciate active participation, you can participate as much or little as you like. We are committed to ensuring that our club reflects the diverse community it serves and are looking for individuals from various backgrounds, age groups and ethnicities. Embracing diversity strengthens our organization and better equips us to support Rappahannock. With your help, we can accomplish even more to assist our county

Rappahannock County is a very special place to live, in large part because of the sense of community created by those who help others. We are proud to be a contributing partner in this effort.
